Ceasefire must mark the beginning of real peace in Gaza

Peace is more than an absence of war!

Welcoming today’s ceasefire in Gaza Greenpeace calls for humanitarian organisations to be given unrestricted access to deliver aid in the face of famine and genocide.

Peace is more than the absence of war. The sound of bullets and bombs must now give way to the sound of aid convoys delivering aid to address the acute and chronic suffering across the Gaza Strip. Real peace comes with  freedom of choice, freedom from fear, freedom from famine, freedom from environmental contamination and freedom to dream.

At this critical juncture we renew our call on the international community to end its culpability and inaction. All necessary international pressure must be brought to bear to ensure that this fragile first step leads to a lasting peace.

Until then Greenpeace demands:

·  An unconditional and permanent ceasefire.

·  The release by Hamas of all hostages.

·  The release by Israel of all illegally detained Palestinians.

·  The imposition of targeted sanctions and a comprehensive arms embargo, enforced by the international community.

·  The unhindered delivery of aid by the UN and other humanitarian organisations.

·  An end to the illegal occupation of Palestine.

Greenpeace supports a future in which Israel and Palestine live side by side in peace, within recognised borders, consistent with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
