Every time we choose to emit CO2, we make a choice about the future we’ll hand our children’s children. Despite almost a decade of Paris Accord pledges to reduce emissions, 2024 broke the record for human CO2 released into the atmosphere. The 2024 total was 41.2 billion tons, up almost one percent compared to 2023. While growth in emissions has slowed, the planet reached its hottest average temperature in human history, 1.28℃ (2.3℉) above pre-industrial temperatures, according to NASA (this link may disappear).
